Look at all these FUN FACTS. I'm a sucker for good historical narrative. S. Michael Wilcox wrote this book, Ten Great Souls I Want to Meet in Heaven, and I started reading it a couple of days ago upon recommendation. I rolled my eyes at the title, then read the inside cover. Each chapter is an entertaining, value-extracting account of a person whose life he finds intriguing or inspiring.
And then he explains why. I guess most people read this book for the uplifting thoughts it expresses, but I really am just lovin' on the fun facts! All these names that people make jokes about and bring up in random conversations, I'm learning about. So I don't have to fake laugh anymore. GEEZ I hate that.I'm not typically a fan of the feel-good books that Deseret Book cranks out weekly (aside from the doctrinally sound ones), but I sure like this one. Thus far. I highly recommend it.
I used to work in a privately-owned LDS bookstore in Texas. I loved it. 10 bucks an hour to sit and read! I would make fun of the books with my sister (especially the fictional ones) but secretly I was addicted to reading them. I liked those facts you shared about St. Patrick! It's fun to know tidbits of trivia like that.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read this book. I too worked an LDS bookstore but it was Desert Book. This book would always stick out to me, but I just never got the chance. Your post inspires me to read it. Maybe after all the book I read this term I can get to it.
